Protected pension ages and exceptions
The normal minimum is 55 before 6 April 2028 and 57 from that date. Some schemes have a protected pension age. Ill-health rules and scheme rules may also change when benefits can be taken. This checker models the normal age test for fresh access from 6 April 2010. It excludes protected ages, ill-health, firefighter, police and armed-forces exceptions, and existing-payment or transitional arrangements. HMRC published draft transition rules in August 2026; earlier withdrawals do not automatically establish continuing access. Check the current rules with your provider.
